8 throwback celebrity couples that we wish were still together

If you're anything like me, you love to see whether your favourite on-screen coupling has managed to take their romance into the real world.

I mean, there's a few that seem to be so perfect that the internet slaps them with the label, #CoupleGoals. Take Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, or Chrissy Teigen and John Legend. And, of course, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds.

But occasionally - as we discovered in the cases of Anna Faris and Chris Pratt, and Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan - things don't always work out.

These eight celebrity couples never made it to the finishing line

The past decade in Hollywood has proved to be a minefield for such material.

1. Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder

Ah the alternative coupling of the 90's, eh? Depp proposed to Ryder, who was eight years his junior, in July of 1990.

But alas, they would never wed, and just three years later, they separated. This, of course, was awkward because the Edward Scissorhands actor had just got "Winona Forever" tattooed onto his arm.

2. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears

Having made history with their matching, double-denim ensembles, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were a #PowerCouple if ever we saw one.

They first met in 1992, when they were cast alongside each other in Disney's The Micky Mouse Club, and by 2000, they were an item. Unfortunately, it all came crashing down three years later.

It wasn't all bad though – on the back of his breakup, Timberlake released his smash hit, Cry Me A River, which purportedly detailed his romance with Spears. While the lyrics suggest that the pop princess cheated on the NSYNC singer, we still don't know the real reason behind their split.

3. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams reportedly hated each other while they were filming The Notebook. But the on-set chemistry must have been undeniable as they dated on-and-off for the next four years, before calling it quits in 2008.

4. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston

Bonafide heartthrob, Brad Pitt, wed Jennifer Aniston in 2000, and the whole of Tinseltown rejoiced. However, just five years later, it fell apart.

When Pitt starred in the action film, Mr & Mrs Smith alongside Angelina Jolie, sparks flew, and the pair proceeded to split.

Pitt and Aniston divorced later that year, and the actor promptly shacked up with Jolie. But now, 24 years later, Pitt and Aniston are both single again - could a reunion be on the cards?

5. Jude Law and Sienna Miller

The subject of much tabloid scrutiny, Sienna Miller and Jude Law's relationship was perhaps doomed from the start. Just one year after Law proposed on Christmas Day of 2004, the actor was forced to publicly apologise to Miller for having an affair with his children's nanny.

6. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens

The High School Musical stars were the envy of teenagers everywhere back in 2006, and this only intensified when the overnight sensations started dating. But perhaps the fame and press attention got to be too much, as they split in 2010.

7. Marilyn Manson and Rose McGowan

Manson and McGowan were engaged from 1999 to 2001, before McGowan called off the wedding due to "lifestyle differences".

8. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

The Eyes Wide Shut actors met in November of 1989 and married the following year.

But despite adopting two children together, the couple announced their intention to divorce in 2001. Some have cited Cruise's commitment to the Church of Scientology as a reason behind the split.

I mean, if these genetically blessed souls couldn't make it, what hope do the rest of us have?
