7 reasons women experience bleeding after sex – and when you should see a doctor

Hailey Bieber was forced to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CRhBHlnHpTx/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shut down speculation</a> that she was expecting her first child with Justin Bieber last week after her husband jokingly captioned a photo of the pair, "Mom and Dad".

The picture in question showed the model in a belly-baring ensemble, with a very flat stomach. But that is beside the point. It's 2021, and we should not be commenting on women's bodies, regardless of whether we think they may be pregnant.

Even if intentions are good, female empowerment and equality activist, <a href="https://twitter.com/capriscafaro" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Capri Cafaro</a>, explains to <strong>Four Nine </strong>why we need to stop asking women if they're pregnant. "Generally, pregnancy is celebrated as a joyous occasion by society – so, people may think they're being kind or expressing excitement if they comment on a woman's pregnant belly or body.

"However, these comments are not always perceived as kind or welcomed."

Even if a woman is pregnant, such remarks can be devastating if they have previously experienced the heartache of miscarriage.

"Women who have suffered a miscarriage or have struggled with fertility may be walking on eggshells their whole pregnancy concerned about if they will be able to carry their baby to term and have it be born healthy," Cafaro continues.

In addition, Cafaro stresses that not everyone is comfortable with their body being commented on, regardless of the context.

Sentiments like, "Oh you're glowing" to a woman, may be well-intentioned, but ultimately, their pregnancy, the lack thereof, or perceived changes to their body are no one's business.

"Leave it up to the woman to discuss her own body and her own life choices," Cafaro adds.

<h2>The impact on body image</h2>
In April of 2021, Twitter user, Raina, went <a href="https://twitter.com/quakerraina/status/1384207854874234890?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">viral</a> after posting about her experience of sharing a selfie, and then being congratulated for being pregnant. "The tummy vs. the response that will stick with me all day," she wrote alongside a screenshot of someone replying to her Instagram story, saying "Congratulations!!" with a pregnant woman emoji.

Raina was not pregnant, and understandably, the comment — which had come from a stranger — lingered with her.

While we do not know Raina's personal circumstances, Cafaro points out that assuming someone is pregnant can harm those who have struggled with body image or their relationship with food.

"It says to the woman, 'I see you're fat'," Cafaro explains. "In a society where fatphobia is ramped and diet culture is revered, making someone feel 'fat' can be devastating depending on where the woman is on their journey of body self-acceptance.

"A comment could trigger self-esteem issues, body dysmorphia or even an eating disorder."

However, the cultural expectation that all women want to have children is also damaging.

"Women are assessed by our appearance or outward, public expression of self rather than on inner values or even professional and academic accomplishments. For example, weddings are usually way bigger deals than graduation from law school or a promotion at work.

<p>Even if intentions are good, female empowerment and equality activist, <a href="https://twitter.com/capriscafaro" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Capri Cafaro</a>, explains to <strong>Four Nine </strong>why we need to stop asking women if they're pregnant. "Generally, pregnancy is celebrated as a joyous occasion by society – so, people may think they're being kind or expressing excitement if they comment on a woman's pregnant belly or body.</p>

<p>Even if a woman is pregnant, such remarks can be devastating if they have previously experienced the heartache of miscarriage.</p>
<p>"Women who have suffered a miscarriage or have struggled with fertility may be walking on eggshells their whole pregnancy concerned about if they will be able to carry their baby to term and have it be born healthy," Cafaro continues.</p>

<p>Sentiments like, "Oh you're glowing" to a woman, may be well-intentioned, but ultimately, their pregnancy, the lack thereof, or perceived changes to their body are no one's business.</p>
<p>"Leave it up to the woman to discuss her own body and her own life choices," Cafaro adds.</p>

<p>In April of 2021, Twitter user, Raina, went <a href="https://twitter.com/quakerraina/status/1384207854874234890?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">viral</a> after posting about her experience of sharing a selfie, and then being congratulated for being pregnant. "The tummy vs. the response that will stick with me all day," she wrote alongside a screenshot of someone replying to her Instagram story, saying "Congratulations!!" with a pregnant woman emoji.</p>
<p>Raina was not pregnant, and understandably, the comment — which had come from a stranger — lingered with her.</p>

<p>"It says to the woman, 'I see you're fat'," Cafaro explains. "In a society where fatphobia is ramped and diet culture is revered, making someone feel 'fat' can be devastating depending on where the woman is on their journey of body self-acceptance.</p>
<p>"A comment could trigger self-esteem issues, body dysmorphia or even an eating disorder."</p>

Autism charity Daisy Chain has seen a surge in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organisation explains that "little is understood" when it comes to how lockdown restrictions impact autism symptoms.

Georgina Spray, 21, who has the condition, tells me that coronavirus has made her world "more unpredictable" which has resulted in her suffering with terrible anxiety.

"It’s like we’re at war with an invisible enemy," she says. "We don’t know where it is lurking and when it might get us. I try to stay at home as much as possible, but when I do go out I am very anxious."

One thing that Georgina struggles with – like many other autistic people – is wearing a mask. "When I wear a mask my anxiety increases," she explains. "I find shops unpleasant anyway with the sensory experience that comes with it. The noises, bright lights and strong smells. Wearing a mask seems to heighten my sensory problems and make shops even more unpleasant."

Per <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guidelines</a>, you are "exempt" if you are unable to put on a mask due to an illness, impairment or disability. You also don't have to wear one if it would cause you "severe distress". Although Georgina is "exempt" from wearing a mask due to her autism, she continues to wear one as she fears she will be called out for not doing so.

"I’ve seen videos of people getting abuse from not wearing a mask," she continues. "For me, confrontation would be more horrible than the feeling of wearing a mask."

Georgina then points out that she wouldn't be able to prove her diagnosis. "I don’t carry that information around with me," she adds. "I wouldn't want to show it to a stranger in a shop anyway."

Another challenge Georgina has had to contend with over the course of the pandemic is social distancing. As an autistic person, she explains she finds it difficult to picture distances, so working out how far two metres is is difficult.

While she has found social distancing markers in supermarkets or on the streets helpful, she adds, "I then get very frustrated when people just ignore them and stand where they want to."

She continues: "People can’t truly understand what it is like to have a disability if they haven’t lived it themselves. Having a hidden disability, like autism, can be very disabling, mainly because people can’t see it and sometimes they don’t believe it’s real.

"Most autistic people have had to follow the same advice as everyone else and haven’t been singled out for being disabled. We want the world to be a more inclusive place so I think if autistic people and parents or carers had different rules to follow than everyone else it might just complicate things even further."

Autism, lockdown and me: 'How COVID-19 restrictions have affected my mental health'

Today marks the year anniversary of Caroline Flack's tragic passing.

Caroline Adie, who has been a volunteer for Samaritans for the past 15 years, tells me that it's a heartbreaking reminder why we need to talk about our mental health.

"I firmly believe that talking about things is the way forward," Adie says. "In simple terms, that's what we do at Samaritans - we offer people a non-judgemental space to speak about their issues.

"It's anonymous, confidential, and we will talk to absolutely anybody who's in distress or despair."

Adie, 55, discovered Samaritans following the untimely death of her father. The grief led led to her being diagnosed with clinical depression. "For a long time after he died, I couldn't verbalise my grief," she tells me. "I had to support my mother who had just lost her life partner.

"But bottling it up was the wrong thing to do. Around six months later, I felt like my heart was literally broken, it was like I had a stone pressing down on my chest. I felt like if I started screaming, I'd never stop."

It was at this point that Adie realised that she needed to speak to a professional, and the ensuing process proved to be "incredibly powerful".

"Although I had really supportive friends and family, it was the act of speaking to a stranger that helped," she continues. "Having someone who had no idea of my background, or my family dynamics meant that I no longer had to edit myself – and the fact that I felt like I was internally screaming into the void every day.

"I became quite evangelical about the fact that we should be speaking more honestly – in the right forums."

While Adie had been aware of Samaritans before, after she'd finished counselling, she hadn't considered volunteering. It wasn't until she saw an advertisement in a newspaper that the idea occurred to her. "That prompted me to apply, because I wanted to give back after everything I'd gone through," she adds. "That was fifteen years ago, and I've been doing it ever since."

The life-saving service, which was founded in 1953, is run by trained volunteers, who provide emotional support to anyone in distress, or at risk of suicide. Most of their work is done through the telephone helpline, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

"The dangerous thing is when you bottle up a thought, and it spirals," Adie tells me. "Just being able to say it out loud, and speak about your problems to someone objectively, means you see it in a different way that is perhaps not as terrifying."

Now a veteran, Adie delivers training sessions for volunteers at her local branch of Samaritans in South East London. And the charity's ethos – which stresses the importance of empathetic listening and human contact – also applies to its volunteers.

"We're so used to talking about these issues, and the longer you do it, the more aware you become of your own mental health," Adie explains. "I'm now much more conscious of when I'm having a bad day or week, which makes me better equipped to handle it.

She details how after coming off a shift, volunteers are required to offload about their calls to their shift leader. They are also required to undertake mental health checks – "because without that solid foundation yourself, you can't support anybody else".

"We're all guilty of putting on a face," Adie continues, touching gently on Caroline Flack, who took her own life last year, aged 40. "When someone asks us how we're feeling, we can feel compelled to say, 'Oh I'm fine,' when it might be more useful for our mental wellbeing to say, 'I'm not so great today'.

"I always have callers who say 'there are other people worse off than me'. But that's not the way it works. There's no sliding scale of being distressed or upset. If you're struggling, you're struggling. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are."

Caroline Flack's death is a tragic reminder of why we must talk about our mental health, says Samaritans volunteer

A number of factors can put people at risk of developing symptoms of anxiety. But, research suggests that the disorder can, in part, be hereditary.

It's common to experience feelings of anxiety at certain points of life. Especially when you're going through a stressful time, whether that be at work, or in your personal relationships.

However, some people experience more intrusive and consistent symptoms of anxiety, which affect their day-to-day life. The symptoms of GAD include nervousness and restlessness. As well as having trouble concentrating, sleep issues, and in some cases, dizziness and panic attacks.

Despite intensive research, experts have not been able to conclusively determine if anxiety is genetic, and its exact causes.

However, there is an undeniable link between genetics and Generalised Anxiety Disorder.

Back in 2002, in a study titled '<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3181683/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Are There Anxious Genes</a>' researchers found that certain chromosomal characteristics are linked to phobias and panic disorder. <p>Zoom fatigue is a thing – so we've got some advice on how to stop feeling tired during lockdown.</p>
<p>Currently, 24 million Britons are working from home, according to sports nutrition company <a href="https://revviesenergy.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Revvies</a>. Amongst that figure, research reveals that 37 per cent claim that their energy levels are the lowest they have ever been. That's over a third of us!</p>

<p>Of course, mindfulness has been linked to a host of cognitive benefits. And this is even more important while in lockdown. Nolan-Neylan says that giving yourself some time to relax, quiet the mind and focus on your breathing can "boost the brain's executive functions".</p>

<p>It can also improve mood, reduce impulsive behaviour and leave you feeling more energised. "This is an especially effective technique after a draining workday to achieve a productive, feel-good evening," he adds.</p>

<p>"The right amount of exercise and sleep will bring the most benefits to your energy levels," Nolan-Neylan says.</p>
<p>"Exercising and sleeping well can make yourself more alert, reduce stress, and improve cognitive functioning. This is sure to make you more energised to get through the day. During lockdown, it might be worth just moving this back to daylight hours," he adds, citing a study by Appalachian State University, which claims that the best time to exercise for both weight management and sleep is 7am.</p>

<p>Nolan-Neylan advises using caffeine "in a moment or fatigue" or "just at the end of the working day". This, he says, "will give you the alertness and energy you need to help you make the most of your day."</p>

<p>Of course, it's important to temper your coffee intake, but studies have shown the benefits of the wonder drug. According to <a href="https://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/pros-and-cons-caffeine-craze" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WebMD</a>, caffeine can improve memory, decrease fatigue, and improve your mental functioning. As well as this, it can speed up your reaction times, which is invaluable when you're working from home, and having to manage many different tasks.</p>

<p>We all know the importance of using our free time in the evenings and weekends, but few of us actually indulge in it. This could mean binge-watching a Netflix series, having a bath or a FaceTime call with a loved one.</p>
<p>Whatever it is, Nolan-Neylan says we must use our spare time to "rest and recharge in order to avoid burning out mid-week. Resting allows you to replenish your energy levels, whilst also taking your mind off work or any worries and anxieties you may have of the week ahead."</p>
