The late Liam Payne’s former girlfriend has explained why she removed the special tattoo she got as a tribute to him nearly two years after his tragic passing.

Kate Cassidy, a 27-year-old influencer, had been dating Payne for two years before he died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

An autopsy later revealed that the One Direction star passed away from "polytrauma," meaning several injuries that involve multiple organs or systems, and a toxicology report confirmed he had traces of “alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants” in his system at the time of his death.

Kate explains why she's removing one of her tribute tattoos

In the years since Payne's death, Cassidy has had several tattoos inked in his memory, including his initials "LP," angel wings, a rose, and the number 444, which held special meaning for the couple.

However, she's now decided to remove one of them after being left unhappy with how it turned out.

On Tuesday (July 28), the influencer shared a mirror selfie from a tattoo studio in Miami, Florida, on her Instagram Story, revealing she was undergoing "tattoo removal today," alongside a white heart emoji.

She later posted a video showing a specialist laser removing the small 444 tattoo from her hand.

Explaining the decision, Cassidy said: "Decided to get some tattoos removed that were done poorly. Will be getting redone eventually."

Why the number 444 meant so much to Liam and Kate

According to The Sun, 444 was a deeply personal number for the couple after Payne repeatedly referenced it in handwritten notes he left for Cassidy.

In one note, the 'Strip That Down' singer wrote that he and Cassidy would "marry within a year/engaged & together forever 444."

Following Payne's death in 2024, Cassidy opened up about the meaning of the number in an emotional social media post.

"A few weeks ago, we sat outside on a beautiful evening manifesting our lives together," she penned. "I keep your note close, even though you told me not to look at it. It said, 'Me and Kate to marry within a year/engaged & together forever 444.'

"Liam, I know we'll be together forever, but not in the way we had planned. You'll always be with me. I've gained a guardian angel.

"I will love you for the rest of my life and beyond, carrying our dreams and memories with me everywhere I go. Forever yours, Katelyn," she added.

What is an angel number?

Angel numbers are repeating sequences of numbers that many people believe carry symbolic or spiritual meanings.

They are usually made up of three or four digits and often appear in repeated patterns, such as 444, 11:11, or recognizable sequences like 321.

People say they can appear anywhere, including clocks, phone numbers, and lottery tickets.

According to Brilliant Earth, each digit from 0 to 9 is believed to have its own meaning, with the number four representing stability and effort.

Kate opens up about dating after Liam's death

Cassidy recently opened up about how difficult she has found dating after losing the man she believed she would spend the rest of her life with.

In a video shared on TikTok, she admitted: "I got dumped, you guys. Dating after losing somebody that you genuinely thought you were going to spend the rest of your life with is really tough because I physically look for Liam in every single guy that I meet."

She explained that she often found herself comparing her new partner to Payne, saying: "Liam would do this, so why aren’t you doing this?"

Cassidy added: "He texted me yesterday and told me we should go our separate ways because it’s just too much, and I understand.

"I feel sad because I don’t like losing people, and I feel like, especially in the beginning of a situationship, it’s so fun, and you’re so excited to see where it goes," she added.
