J.K. Rowling issues apology for the saddest death in 'Harry Potter'

Being a child that grew up in the 90s and 00s, there was one series of books that came to dominate my life. Harry Potter was everything for me; it was what I was obsessed with and, when the series came to its eventual end, I was left lost in a world of computers and game consoles. I had spent 10 years of my childhood with my head buried in the hardback books, reading and re-reading every page, taking in every detail and looking for Easter Eggs. However, while I have the utmost respect for JK Rowling for creating a world that I and many others escaped to, I will never forgive her for one thing:

Killing Dobby.

Every year, May 2 rolls around and brings back a host of emotions for Harry Potter fans. If you were unaware, May 2 is the date that the Battle of Hogwarts took place. And, more poignantly, this year marks 20 years since the fateful battle took place.

As is a tradition on this date, JK Rowling has issued an apology for the killing of a character from the series. It all started in 2015 when Rowling began her long list of apologies by saying sorry for killing off Fred Weasley.

Then, in 2016, the author apologized for killing off Lupin, writing:

"Once again, it's the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts so, as promised, I shall apologise for a death. This year: Remus Lupin."

Last year, it was time to apologize for the killing of Severus Snape *weeps uncontrollably*.

"OK, here it is. Please don't start flame wars over it, but this year I'd like to apologise for killing (whispers)... Snape. *runs for cover*"

Now, however, Rowling has issued perhaps her most emotive apology yet - saying that she is sorry for killing off everyone's favorite house elf, Dobby.

"It's that anniversary again. This year, I apologise for killing someone who didn't die during the #BattleofHogwarts, but who laid down his life to save the people who'd win it. I refer, of course, to Dobby the house elf."

Understandably, given the lovable nature of Dobby, Twitter went into relapse. Plenty of people gushed about their love of the elf, with feelings of sorrow and mourning being brought to the surface once more.

While I'm all here for Rowling apologizing for killing off characters, it doesn't put to bed that I still have an issue. Dobby was the most innocent, pure and loyal character in the books - and how did Rowling repay him? By killing him off. Do you think that is okay, Jo? Honestly, do you? Because, looking at it from a readers' perspective, that was a pretty low blow.

It seems hard to move on from the death of Dobby, despite it happening so long ago. It'll be interesting to see who Rowling apologizes for next year. But, given the nature of Harry Potter fans (including myself), she is likely to face a Sirius (hehe) backlash whoever she picks.
