Katy Perry may have witnessed an alleged incident involving her ex-husband Russell Brand, after it emerged that the singer could have been present when he allegedly inappropriately put his head in a woman's lap during a television production.

The pop star was largely kept out of proceedings during Brand's trial, but the possibility that she witnessed the alleged incident was raised during legal arguments ahead of the case being heard by a jury in London.

With the incident said to have taken place in 2009 while filming for Channel 4, Ian Winter KC, who was representing Brand, told the court that the woman involved claimed other people had been present at the time, potentially including Perry.

“She [the victim] says that other people were in the room and witnessed it, possibly including the defendant's future wife, Ms Katy Perry,” he said.

Despite the reference, Scotland Yard did not approach the singer, 42, to obtain a witness statement, and her possible presence was also removed from the trial after submissions from Brand's legal team.

Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC agreed that references to Perry should be excluded, telling the court: “For the avoidance of doubt, the prosecution recognises that matters post-2009 involving his relationship with Katy Perry may be sensitive, as may his previous faiths, and we are content to remove these.”

Now, the convicted sex offender, who was found guilty of rape, as well as three counts of sexual assault, awaits his sentencing and could face years in prison, with other assault claims still to be heard.

Perry and Brand first met in 2009 on the set of the comedy film Get Him To The Greek, where their relationship developed quickly, with the pair tying the knot the following year in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Rajasthan, India.

However, their marriage was short-lived, with the couple separating after just 14 months together as husband and wife, with their divorce finalised in 2012.

Details of Brand's past struggles with alcohol and drug addiction were also kept from jurors during the trial, including information about his life before his conversion to Christianity in 2024.

Senior Crown prosecutor David Roberts addressed questions about the investigation, saying: “We followed all reasonable lines of inquiry in statements that would have been relevant to the specific charges and I'm satisfied that all reasonable lines of inquiry were covered.”
