Study finds drinking a glass of wine before bed could help you lose weight

If you've made your New Year's resolution something along the lines of "lose a few pounds and tone up so much that I have to take the mirrors out of my house because of how distracting I am", then listen up. Even if you're sticking to a strict gym regime and following a wholesome diet that leaves you clutching at yourself and saying "my body is a temple", there's one more thing you could be doing to shed the extra weight.

Scientists at Washington State University have found certain fruits are particularly good at converting excess amounts of white fat (fat that is stored) into beige fat (fat that burns calories). The good news? Among these "fruits" are berries and... wine grapes. Yes, it looks like there's another good reason to pop the cork other than the fact that it's Wednesday.

The study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, pointed to a substance called resveratrol - a type of polyphenol that is an antioxidant found in a lot of fruits.

"Polyphenols in fruit, including resveratrol, increase gene expression that enhances the oxidation of dietary fats so the body won’t be overloaded," said Professor Min Du in the study. "They convert white fat into beige fat that burns lipids off as heat – helping to keep the body in balance and prevent obesity and metabolic dysfunction."

Scientific terms aside, the important thing to note is that this resveratrol compound found in fruits (and in red wine) is what helps to convert the bad fat into good fat. And it's a particularly exciting revelation for those interested in strategies for the prevention and treatment of obesity.

So, sure, the compound in red wine could help you lose weight, but when is the best time to drink it? Another study conducted in 2012 found that a glass of wine or two consumed late at night helped curb cravings and late-night snacking, which then also helps with weight loss. One lady even claimed that drinking wine is what helped her make it to her 100th birthday. So a glass before bed it is!

But before you tip your mug of detoxifying herbal tea down the sink and fill 'er up with shiraz, you should know that most doctors probably wouldn't approve. Too much alcohol has a lot of negative consequences on the body, plus there are far more efficient ways to get the optimal dosage of resveratrol. The sad reality is that the amount of resveratrol in wine is far less than what it is in fruit.

"Many of the beneficial polyphenols are insoluble and get filtered out during the wine production process," said Professor Du, who added that wines like merlot or cabernet sauvignon are particularly low in resveratrol. You're better off just snacking on a bowl of blueberries, strawberries and regular grapes instead.

So, it's probably best that you keep going to the gym, doing your "my body is a temple" diet and just sticking it out – you'll get there eventually. But go ahead and add a few more blueberries to your mid-morning smoothie for good measure (and pour that glass of wine... Who am I to judge?).
