Sydney Sweeney discovers she is related to Marilyn Monroe
Alexandra B.
After endless comparisons between two of Hollywood’s biggest blonde bombshells, it has been revealed that Sydney Sweeney is related to late heartthrob Marilyn Monroe.
From their strikingly good looks, signature hourglass figures, which are always styled to complement them, and strings of famous boyfriends, the two draw uncanny similarities, which a new study has now revealed is no coincidence.
Sydney Sweeney and Marilyn Monroe are distant cousins
Ancestry researcher MyHeritage has discovered that Sydney and Marilyn are actually cousins. Well, ninth cousins once removed.
The relationship has been traced through the actress’ paternal lines: Sydney through her father, Steven Sweeney, and Marilyn through her biological father, Charles Stanley Gifford.
Their families are connected through a shared ancestor, Ezra Perry (c.1625–1689), an early settler in Sandwich, Massachusetts.
Speaking about the link, Roi Mandel, Director of Research at MyHeritage, said: “People have always drawn parallels between Sydney Sweeney and Marilyn Monroe, but seeing their paths align on a deeper level inspired us to look for a real bond in the MyHeritage archives.
“Uncovering their shared branch was incredible, it’s a powerful reminder that humanity is one vast family tree, and when we dig deep, we uncover how remarkably interconnected we all are.”
The physical comparisons resurfaced earlier this year when Sydney wore a 73-year-old vintage Cecil Chapman gown that closely echoed one of Marilyn’s most recognisable looks. It resembled the dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch, when she stood over a subway vent, and the rush of air from the passing train lifted her white dress.
Sydney has been constantly described as a modern-day Marilyn, from her Old Hollywood styling and blonde bombshell image to the intense attention around her public image and relationships.
It is not just their looks that have drawn comparisons between the pair
There is another parallel too. Marilyn converted to Judaism in 1956 before marrying Arthur Miller, while reports this week suggest Sydney is considering converting to Judaism amid her relationship with Scooter Braun.
While Sydney has not yet commented on the discovery of her famous ancestor, surely it would be hard for her to be anything other than flattered.
MyHeritage also recently revealed another Hollywood familial connection. Friends co-stars and on-screen lovers, Courteney Cox and the late Matthew Perry, were distant cousins.
