A social media influencer who captured hearts with her ultra-low-budget wedding has tragically died during childbirth.
Kiara Brokenbrough, a 32-year-old from Southern California, rose to viral fame four years ago after revealing she spent just $500 on her wedding, including a wedding dress that cost only $47. Now, her family has confirmed she has passed away following complications while giving birth to her son.
Kiara's family announce heartbreaking death
According to her loved ones, the Los Angeles bride died as a result of childbirth-related complications, although the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in West Virginia has not yet confirmed an official cause of death. At the time, the Brokenbrough family had reportedly been in the process of relocating back to California.
In the wake of the tragedy, Kiara’s mother-in-law launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her husband, Joel, and their newborn son, Jonah.
In a message shared on the fundraiser, the family said: “This tragedy has taken a devastating toll on Joel. He will need support (physically, mentally, spiritually, and financially) from his family and friends and the kindness of strangers.”
The page has already raised more than $120,000 toward its $150,000 goal.
They added: “As Joel begins this unimaginable next chapter as a single parent to a preemie in the NICU, and having to deal with the heartache of losing his beloved wife (whom he loves so much), he needs all the support he can get as he tries to navigate life without her.”
The couple’s baby was originally due in June, though it remains unclear whether Kiara’s death led to an early delivery or if complications from a premature birth contributed to her passing. Despite the circumstances, the newborn is said to be making “remarkable progress” while receiving care in the NICU.
Joel also confirmed the heartbreaking news in a post shared to his Instagram Story on April 13, writing: “My beautiful, God-fearing, worshipping wife has gone home to be in the presence of the Lord.”

Kiara and Joel had previously gone viral for their unconventional wedding, which proved you don’t need to spend a fortune to tie the knot. The couple held their ceremony along the scenic Angeles Crest Highway, inviting just 30 to 40 guests for an intimate celebration.
Keeping costs low, they relied heavily on help from friends and family. Their biggest expense was a $200 arch, while guests paid for their own food and drinks at a relaxed lounge-style reception, with Joel’s suit reportedly costing around $100.
Kiara’s story once inspired thousands for its simplicity and ingenuity, demonstrating that fairytale weddings are never unattainable, and now, her passing has left many of those same followers mourning a life cut tragically short.
